Uzaklar
A room with a shared terrace, named after Uzaklar — the boat of the Atasoy family, the first Turkish crew to reach Antarctica.
Uzaklar
Osman Atasoy was born in Istanbul on 22 July 1957. He learned the sea in his father's rowing boat, rowed and sailed for the Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe clubs, and explored the Marmara and the Aegean in Poyraz, his six-metre sailing dinghy. He studied sociology at Istanbul University.
In 1992 he and his wife Zuhal Atasoy set off from Sığacık harbour to sail around the world in Uzaklar, an 8.5-metre yacht. Their daughter Deniz was born in New Zealand in 1995, and the three of them completed the circumnavigation in 1997.
On their return they donated Uzaklar to the Turkish Navy for display at the Naval Museum in Beşiktaş.
In 2008 they set out again in Uzaklar II on a four-year voyage across the Atlantic and Southern Oceans to Antarctica, returning to Türkiye in 2012 — the first Turkish crew ever to reach the Antarctic continent.
Their five-year circumnavigation is told in the book "Uzaklar, Atasoylar'ın Dünya Seyahati".
