No. 08 · Atatürk's yacht

Savarona

Two bedrooms, a kitchenette and a terrace — named after Savarona, the yacht of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

The story behind the name

Savarona

The luxury ocean-going yacht Savarona was designed by William Francis Gibbs, the leading American naval architect of his day, and built in 1931 for Emily Roebling Cadwallader at a cost of four million dollars.

Mrs Cadwallader was the granddaughter of John Augustus Roebling, designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, one of the engineering marvels of the 19th century — so it is hardly surprising that she owned one of the largest and fastest yachts of her time.

In 1938 the Republic of Türkiye bought Savarona for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and she still sails under the Turkish flag today.
